A philanthropic fund connecting industry, government, and academia to responsibly and rapidly scale geologic hydrogen by the 2030s.

Subsurface resources can scale in years, not decades.

This has worked before.

Two subsurface technologies launched within the last three decades. Both achieved lift-off with public geodata, shared foundational research, and coordinated policy strategy. Time-bound philanthropy can deploy this playbook to scale geologic hydrogen in years, not decades.

SHALE GAS · 1821 → 1998

A 150-year niche. 20 years to scale.

Known since 1821, shale was viewed as niche and uneconomic to produce. The Eastern Gas Shales Project in 1976 drilled multiple open-science wells. Within 20 years, the global energy landscape was transformed.

GEOTHERMAL · 1904 → 2026

Dormant for centuries. 12 years to grid.

Demonstrated in 1904, geothermal's been constrained to rare geological conditions. An open testbed in 2014 launched commercial-scale “geothermal anywhere” on the grid by 2026.

Gas seeping from Devonian shale lit the streetlamps of a small New York town.

First geothermal power plant — Larderello, Tuscany

Steam from Tuscan fields lit five light bulbs, demonstrating for the first time the ability to harness geothermal energy for electricity production.

OPEN-DATA INFLECTION

The Eastern Gas Shales Project assembled over 40 industry, academic, and government partners around dozens of open-science demonstration wells.

Slick-water fracturing made shale economic. The resulting shale boom rewrote global energy markets within a decade. Overall, ~150 years of stagnation accelerated by 20 years of progress.
